Hassell, Stephen Paul, age 73, a resident of Arlington and previously of Boston and Weston, Massachusetts, died peacefully on January 12, 2023. Born in Hyde Park, MA, to Emily and the late Donald Hassell, Stephen graduated from Archbishop Williams High School in 1967 and remained active at the school, serving on the Board of Trustees for nine years.
He received a B.S. in civil engineering from Northeastern University and an MBA from Babson College and was a frequent guest lecturer at both institutions. For nearly 50 years he worked in the real estate, construction and architecture industry as a civil engineer, marketing and management executive, and industry consultant to companies from Wang to New Balance.
Stephen was active in a number of industry and charitable organizations: Society of College and University Planners, New England Health Care Engineers, CORNET, NAIOP, Board of Overseers for Franciscan Children’s Hospital, Executive Board for The Fenway Alliance FACES Committee, Executive Committee for The Babson Real Estate Alumni Network, and YMCA of Greater Boston Advisory Board.
Stephen enjoyed spending time with family and friends, playing golf, reading about history, and following sports, especially his beloved Boston Red Sox. He is survived by his partner Diane DeCoste and their grandchildren, daughters Jacqueline, Alexandra and her husband Chris, son Joseph and his wife Neena and their children, brothers Alan and his wife Sue, Daniel and his wife Kathy, sisters Mary and her husband John, Virginia and her partner Diane, along with his nieces and nephews and extended family.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit in the DeVito Funeral Home 1145 Mass. Ave., ARLINGTON on Thursday from 4-7 pm. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday at 10 am in Saint Julia Church, Weston. Please meet at church, funeral home staff will be available to assist with parking. Burial to follow in Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in memory of Stephen to the YMCA of Greater Boston at ymcaboston.org/giving.
