Died peacefully in his home surrounded by his family on 4 September 2017. He was born in New York City, the last of 5 children, on 9 June 1929. He grew up in the Bronx and attended DeWitt Clinton High School where he captained the football team. Following graduation, he received a full scholarship to Columbia University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. He also played on the football team. He was accepted into the Masters program at the Air Force Institute of Technology, at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio, where he earned his Masters degree in Aeronautical Engineering. It was during this time Nick married Mary Bernadette Opperman and eventually relocated (post military career), to the greater Boston area, settling in Arlington. In the private sector, he worked for Geophysics Corporation of America, American Science & Engineering, Ion Beam Technologies, FEI, and Micrion. Nick's storied career evolved from missile and payload design for Government testing in different atmospheric conditions, to the semi-conductor industry, where he achieved 5 patents with Micrion between 1987-1992. In addition he received his PE certificate to join the elite group of Professional Engineering. In his non work time, Nick enjoyed playing his Guild guitar, at which he became proficient (self taught), Cape Cod summer vacations with his family, swimming and golf, the latter of which he said he was lousy at his whole life! Nick was predeceased by his wife Mary B. Guarino of Torrington, CT and survived by his 4 sons, Frank T. and his wife Mary Jane of Seattle, Paul J. of Arlington, John N. and his wife Joann of St. Louis, and Ernest J. of Arlington. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. He had a great sense of humor, always enjoyed a good joke, and enjoyed his beloved family meal. He was one of a kind, loved by many, and will be missed by all. Relatives and friends are invited to visiting hours Saturday morning 8:30 to 10:30 in the DeVito Funeral Home 1145 Mass Avenue ARLINGTON and to Nick's funeral mass at 11:00am in St. Eulalia Church, Winchester.
