John L. Battaglia, 103, formerly of New Hyde Park, NY, died October 9, 2022 at Lahey Hospital, Burlington, surrounded by his family. Born November 13, 1918 in New York City, son of Salvatore and Maria (Moltisanti) Battaglia. Preceded in death by parents, sister Carmela Caruso, brother George Battaglia, and niece Lora Altman. Survived by his wife of 73 years, Carmela (DeStefano) Battaglia; sons Michael P. Battaglia and wife, Annabella of Arlington, MA; John S. Battaglia and wife, M. Ellen Tarpey of Pittsburgh, PA; Paul G. Battaglia and wife, Cynthia of Somerset, PA; grandchildren Richard Battaglia and wife, Deborah of Arlington, MA; James Battaglia and wife, Tiffany of Marblehead, MA; Claudia (Battaglia) Stevanus and husband, Jordan of Somerset, PA; great-grandchildren Samuel and Audrey Battaglia of Arlington, MA and Mason Battaglia of Marblehead, MA; numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. John served in the Army during WWII attending the Army Intelligence School at Camp Richey and was deployed to the European Theater of Operation, achieving the rank of Sergeant. He was a graduate of St. John’s University in 1942. Following discharge from the Army, he worked as an accountant and started his own practice in New York City. He married Carmela June 12, 1949. He retired at the age of 75. He was a member of St. Eulalia Catholic Church in Winchester. He contributed to numerous charities, including veterans’ organizations.

Viewing will be Friday, October 14, from 4-8 pm at DeVito Funeral Home, in Arlington. Massachusetts Ave., Arlington. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, October 15, at 10 am in St. Eulalia Catholic Church, 50 Ridge St., Winchester. Interment at Calvary Cemetery, 686 Washington St., Winchester, with full military honors.

In lieu of flowers, donations in John’s memory can be sent to the American Red Cross Hurricane Relief Fund.
