In Our Care

Ernestine (Kachavos) Kaliontzis November 27, 2021 at age 87 of Arlington. Raised in Derry NH she was the daughter of John and Genoula (Koucoulas) Kachavos. Ernestine was the 6th of 7 children. She was predeceased by her brothers Charles Kachavos of Derry NH, George Kachavos of Manchester NH and Louis Kachavos of New Boston NH and sisters Demetra Kachavos of Derry NH, Mary Kallechey of Concord NH and Florida, and Betsy Speros of Arlington.

Ernestine attended Pinkerton Academy in Derry NH where she enjoyed sports and outdoor activities including Field Hockey and Basketball. She worked as a lifeguard in the summers and enjoyed ice skating and skiing in the winter. Ernestine went to Roger Williams School of Nursing in RI and became a registered nurse. Her favorite job was working at Boston Children's Hospital where she was charge nurse of the Emergency Department. It was while she was working in Boston that she met her husband the late George Kaliontzis who fondly called her "Ketch," a nickname she picked up from her school days. Ernestine and George were married in 1961 and lived in Somerville MA and had two daughters. In 1965, her family moved to Arlington MA where she remained until her death. Ernestine was good with her hands and had many crafty hobbies over the years including sewing, knitting, crochet, and later quilting. She made outfits, ponchos and hats for her young daughters as well as quilted-blankets.

While she raised her children, Ernestine used her leadership and nursing skills through many volunteer and part-time roles including Brackett School PTA president. As an active member of the Dormition of Virgin Mary Church in Somerville and later St. Athanasius the Great in Arlington she served as a Sunday School teacher and member of the Philoptochos women's society. Often she filled in where needed as a school nurse in Arlington Public Schools. As an Arlington Girl Scouts leader for Cadet and Senior Scout troops, she went on many camping trips and taught outdoor skills. Her no-nonsense and hands-off style of leadership fostered personal growth, independence and life lessons that left lasting impressions on many young girls' lives.

When her children were older, Ernestine went back to college to obtain a certification in Geriatrics and worked part time at New England Rehab in Woburn and then Arlington Senior Center. George and Ernestine hosted many parties and holiday dinners over the years as they loved to entertain and no one ever went home hungry. Ernestine loved plants and flowers and together with George maintained a beautiful garden at their home. She was a member of the Arlington Garden Club, and served as president. Ernestine was a strong presence in the community for over 50 years.

Ernestine will be deeply missed by her daughters Joanne Kaliontzis of Boston and Maria Tinglof of Concord, her grandchildren Seth and George Tinglof, sister in law Kaliopy Kaliontzis of Somerville, sister in law Kathryn Kachavos of New Boston NH and many nieces and nephews.
