In Our Care

Our dear friend, sister, partner and aunt, Barbara Christine Guentert, passed away on September 15th 2023 after an 18-month hard-fought battle with ovarian cancer. Barbara was loving and generous with a passion for life that was contagious. Barbara, born on November 7, 1964, was the youngest daughter of the late Adelheid M. and Dr. Otto J. Guentert of Sudbury, Massachusetts, and is survived by her partner Michael, her sister Regina (Volker) and brother Martin (Usha). Barbara was a special aunt in particular to her nieces Lara and Elena to whom she was like a third parent. Barbara is also survived by two nephews Julian (Alli) and Sebastian and two grand nieces Frida and Alma. After completing her degree in Pharmacy at the University of Rhode Island College of Pharmacy, Barbara continued on to her long career in pharmacy at CVS. As a pharmacist, she was a role model and manager, teaching many pharmacy students. She retired in 2020 just as the Covid-19 pandemic began. During the pandemic, Barbara came out of retirement to aid with the Covid-19 vaccination effort as a much-needed pharmacist-vaccinator. Outside of work, Barbara and Michael enjoyed spending their summers in Falmouth, MA with family and friends, their winters skiing in the US and in Europe. They enjoyed traveling, especially to Germany, where Barbara has cherished extended family. We cannot think of Barbara without also including her fantastic network of close friends, many of whom gave time, care, and compassion during the most challenging times of her illness. She will be painfully missed by all. The family is planning a private funeral and a celebration of life (tba). In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial gifts be made to the Barbara C. Guentert '89 Pharmacy Scholarship at the University of Rhode Island. Contributions may be made online at http:/www.alumni.uri.edu/GuentertScholarship or checks may be made to the URI Foundation and mailed to PO Box 1700, Kingston, RI 02881 with a note identifying the Barbara C. Guentert '89 Pharmacy Scholarship.
