Arthur M. Papas
September 13, 1927 - December 10, 2020
Papas, Arthur Michael, 93, passed away peacefully Thursday, December 10, 2020, in Marlboro, MA. His children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were able to spend time with him on his final days. He was born in Boston September 13, 1927 to Michael Nicholas and Karliniki (Pascalitis) Papas.
He was a devoted husband to the late Elaine (Speros) and loving father. He is survived by four children; Michael Papas of Cambridge, Theodore Papas and wife Martha of Exeter NH, Julia Lombardi and husband Richard of Marlborough - with whom he lived with, and Kathryn VanKuilenburg and husband John of North Billerica; nine grandchildren; Alana, Jonathan, Joseph, Michael, David, Christina, Nicole, Thomas, and Julia; 4 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was brother to Anna McCreary of Rockport and the late Nicholas M. Papas. He leaves behind a large extended family and will be deeply missed by all.
He was a WWII U.S. Marine Corp veteran serving in the South Pacific after graduating from Boston Trade High School. After his honorable military discharge, he married his wife of 57 years, the late Elaine (Speros). While raising his family, he attended and graduated from Lincoln Institute (Northeastern University) with a degree in Engineering. During his early working years, he was a Mechanical Draftsman in the U.S. Naval Shipyard in Charlestown, MA. In the mid-1980s, he retired from a supervisory position from Koch Industries, in Wilmington MA. Arthur was also successful with real estate investment and enjoyed the challenges of property management.
Arthur had a long and prosperous life full of service, commitment, and generosity to family, community, and country.
Throughout his life, Arthur was a resident of both Boston and Arlington where he made considerable contributions. In the Boston’s Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral of New England, he was committed to the Boy Scouts, organizing activities that provided leadership and guidance to many local youth. In Arlington’s St. Athanasius the Great Greek Orthodox Church, he was past President and provided oversight and generosity for many church building restorations. Arthur was also an active member of numerous Masonic Lodges, York Rite, and the Aleppo Shrine. He was a Past Master of The Massachusetts Lodge in Boston and Lafayette-Dover Lodge in Norwood, along with being a recipient of the Jos. Warren Medal for Distinguished Service to the Masonic fraternity. He was a life-long blood donor to help those in need, and in retirement he was a volunteer driver at the Shriner's Hospital for Children.
Arthur lived a noble life of good deeds, acceptance, compassion, and kindness towards others. His pleasant temperament allowed him to easily connect with people and friends.
Relatives and friends are invited to a funeral service on Wednesday at 11 am in St. Athanasius Greek Orthodox Church. Visiting will be held from 9 - 11 am in the church. Face coverings and social distancing are required. A live stream of the funeral service can be found by visiting saintathanasius.org/livestreaming. Burial to follow in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery at approximately 12:15 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Arthur’s name may be made to the St. Athanasius Greek Orthodox Church, 4 Appleton Street, Arlington, MA 02476.
