Obituary For Wenken Ling
Wenken Ling, 60, passed away from complications of pancreatic cancer on Sunday, April 24, 2022, surrounded by her loving family at her home in Cambridge, Mass.
She was born November 10, 1961 in Taipei, Taiwan and was the daughter of the late Chen-Hsieh and Sui-Yee Ling. She and her family came to the United States when she was 6, settling in the Flushing area of Queens, NY, and she graduated from Yale University in 1984 with a degree in Applied Mathematics. After graduation she moved to Cambridge and worked as a software engineer for a variety of computer networking firms, including Bolt Beranek & Newman and Juniper Networks. It was soon after arriving in Cambridge that she met her future husband, David Bowen, whom she married in 1994. She is survived by her husband and their two daughters, Elizabeth and Abigail, her sister, Wenky Ling, nephew Ryan and niece Sara, of Wayne, NJ.
One of her great passions was music, and she was a serious, dedicated pianist, playing since she was 8. She filled her home with beautiful sounds from her grand piano, whether just trying out a new piece or practicing for an upcoming lesson, class or recital. She inspired countless others in music as well, and was always planning for the next Symphony Hall or Tanglewood outing.
Whether it was music, photographing nature scenes and people with her treasured Leica, learning a new language in addition to Chinese, English and French (she was recently working on Italian, after picking up some German to help in her voice lessons), walking/exercising (always 10,000+ steps a day), going to art galleries to view her favorite medieval illuminated manuscripts, reading from the stacks of books she would bring home from the library, cooking one of her well-honed specialties (she would not stand for overly sweet things), or designing itineraries for overseas travel, she never did anything half-heartedly. We will all truly miss such a brilliant, inspiring, generous and loving wife, mother and friend who lived life to its fullest but was taken from us too soon.
Relatives and friends are invited to a visitation in the Bigelow Chapel of Mt. Auburn Cemetery, 580 Mt. Auburn St., Cambridge on Tuesday May 3rd from 11 am - 12 pm and to a funeral service to begin at 12 pm. Burial to immediately follow. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in memory of Wenken to either Dana-Farber Cancer Institute or New England Conservatory of Music.
Arrangements are under the care of DeVito Funeral Home of Watertown. Please visit devitofuneralhome.com to view an online guestbook.
