Obituary For Vahan "Vi" Berberian

Berberian, Vahan “Vi” passed away peacefully at home on June 28, 2021, in Winchester, Massachusetts at the age of 97.

Born March 9, 1924, Vahan was the son of Khachadur and Sahaganush Berberian, brother to the late Anne Ohanian and the late Nishan Berberian. He was raised in Arlington. In 1950, Vahan married Beverly Hagopian and they remained lovingly married for 70+ years.

Fiercely independent to the end, his life was the living embodiment of his favorite song, Frank Sinatra’s “My Way.” Drafted into WWII at 19 years old, he requested a transfer to a combat unit. With the “Fighting Tigers” 10th Armored Division, he fought in numerous battles including The Battle of the Bulge. Twice injured in combat, he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal.

After the war, he went to work at the family grocery store, Warren Street Market in Arlington with his late father and late brother. With an obsession for quality and service, they successfully grew the business to become a mainstay for East Arlington residents for many years to come. An avid golfer, Vi was a proud member of Oakley Country Club for over 30 years.

Vahan is survived by his wife Beverly, children Susan O’Dell of Lowell, Janet Flanagan and her husband Brian Flanagan of Chatham, Mark Berberian and his wife, Roberta Berberian of Lexington and Vikki Berberian of Arlington. He was also proud of his four grandchildren - Patrick Flanagan, Kelly Flanagan, Max Berberian and Lily Berberian.

Condolences

It is so sad that a vibrant, joyful, wonderful human has passed I hit him on my drive on the 6 th hole,he fell down and I thought I had killed him,I called his son every day to make sure he was breathing. One time I was his partner and I was praising our opponents,he took me to a side and said ,shut up ,do not encourage these bastards. I loved him

Bev, Susan, Janet, Mark & Vicky, I remember many a holiday in Belmont, spent with 'Uncle Vi' and all of you, always laughing, always a fun time. Take comfort from knowing he was a good man, a good family man and a good community man. So sorry for your loss. Donna Ohanian

Dear Bev and family, Our sincere condolences on Vi's passing. He lived a good long life, served his country with honors and was a friend to many. As my Dad's best friend, I'll always remember their times together. I did deliveries for Vi and Nish in my college days...driving the Warren Street truck through East Arlington, often lost looking for the next two decker to run up groceries. I hope to pay my respects on Tuesday, but if not, he'll be in our prayers. Love, Greg & Irene Mazmanian

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Vi. Because of Covid I wasn't able to visit. One of my favorite memories of you when you lived here at Clocktower drive was one of the days I fixed your computer and you were able to do your stocks again. When I turned around and looked at your face you were as happy as a little kid who had just discovered Disney World. You will be missed
