Obituary For Mary E. Leiser

Mary E (MacLeod) Leiser, formerly of Arlington, Massachusetts entered into eternal rest December 21, 2021, at her home in Knights Landing, California.
She was the daughter of Marjorie (MacAuley) and Herbert Macleod. Mary attended Arlington Public Schools and graduated from AHS in 1966.
Upon graduation she was employed at the Lahey Clinic in Kenmore Square, Boston as an administrative assistant. She was instrumental in the development of the Clinic's initial Tumor Registry, laying the foundation for its certification. This type of registry is an information system designed for the collection, storage, and management of data on persons with cancer. These registries play a critical role in cancer surveillance.
Mary settled in California in 1972 where she met her husband, Gregory Knox Leiser, a third-generation farmer on his family farm in Sutter County. Mary quickly adapted to farm life and managed the Farm’s business by applying her background in accounting, record keeping, and administrative organization. She kept the farm running efficiently and in compliance with the myriad of state and federal rules and regulations governing agriculture. Mary was also no stranger to farm work, personally operating farm equipment essential at harvest time ranging from forklifts to hulking bankout wagons.
The Leiser Farm was well known in the Sacramento Valley. Her husband Greg was on numerous agricultural boards and advisory committees, he was a recipient of the prestigious Young Farmer of the Year Award and was the first farmer to raise wild rice and double crop his fields in the Valley. Some of the past and present crops grown on the farm include rice, wild rice, wheat, corn, sunflowers, safflower, tomatoes, pumpkins, beans, melons and starter grapevines for export to Italian Vineyards. Their sweet corn was a popular product at local farmer’s Markets.
Mary and Greg were also known for growing hard shell gourds. The farm was one of the largest hard shell gourd farms in America and attracted many well-known artists throughout the West who would select their gourds directly from their fields. For over a decade they hosted gourd classes and festivals which were well attended by the public and artists alike. Both Mary and Greg were members of the California Gourd Society where Greg served as Director.
Mary believed in the importance of community service and was well known and respected throughout Yolo County for her activism. She spearheaded many campaigns that contributed to the wellbeing of the Knights Landing Community including the adoption of the community growth and development plan and the Senior Citizen Meal Program. When the County proposed to close the Knights Landing Library, she worked tirelessly as a founding member of the Friends of The Knights Landing Library to raise funds. She was essential in creating and running the community thrift store known as the Friends of The Knights Landing Library Rerun store. Her steadfast efforts led to the permanent establishment of the Knights Landing Library at a much larger building in town and many programs for children.
Mary came from a large family having relatives in the US and Canada. She enjoyed her visits back to Massachusetts which often included a trip up to the Canadian Maritimes where she spent many childhood summers. She leaves behind a son, Peter Leiser, his wife Janice Parmer and a grandson Killian. Also, brothers and sisters: Camilla MacPhee, PEI, Canada, Helen MacLeod Thomson (Captane) Davis, CA, William James MacLeod, Shrewsbury, MA, Audrey MacLeod Pfeiffer (Donald), Middletown, RI, David MacLeod, Knights Landing, CA, Charles MacLeod (Cynthia) Hampton Falls, NH and Peter MacLeod (Joanne), Sandwich, MA. Mary also had numerous nieces and nephews with whom she remained close and who dearly loved her. Mary leaves many cousins, family and friends and her cousin Clairelee Bulkley is lovingly appreciated. She was predeceased by her husband, her parents and her brother Herbert John MacLeod. A Celebration of life will be held in California at a later date.
Contributions in her memory may be made to The Friends of the Knights Landing Library, care of Suzie Richter 42351 Third Street. PO Box 517, Knights Landing, California, 95645

Please accept our sincere condolences 💐! I was so happy to read Mary'S obituary as I did not know everything she was involved in over the years! I was so blessed to go with Helen and Mom ( Mildred) to visit Mary and Greg at their ranch yeas ago! The whole experience was very mystical to say the least! We are from PEI and our beautiful, cousin Mary welcomed us and drove us everywhere! And at super Mary asked me if I wanted tea and I said, no thanks, I don't drink tea! Ha , she said where did you come from? Everyone from PEI drinks north-side tea! To you Mary, I know you are in heaven my dear, as you were such a pure heart person! To the MacLeod and Peter and the Leiser Families, With sympathy, love and prayers, Marleen Clark ( Campbell )

My sister was a remarkable person. She was a wife, mother and grandmother, a farmer, a community organizer, a businesswoman, an angel to those in need and a great sister. Mary, you will be missed by many. May you rest in peace. Until we meet again, your sister Audrey.

Rest well, my dear friend. When I see brilliant sunflowers, hear a Scottish harp, or see a gesture of human kindness, I will know it's you.

Mary, my heart is broken. After 64 years of friendship and years of sickness you are now at peace. It was an honor to take care of you over the years, and to call your family my family. I will treasure all the special memories that I have of you, and will lock them away in my heart. As we always said in parting, "later" never good bye. This is a later and I will see you someday. I will love you always. Nancy

Condolences and prayers to Peter and his family and all my Macleod cousins and their family . I moved to CA the same time as Mary and we never managed to get close and yet so far away. We were kids last time I saw her. Probably, at the Jamaica Rd ceilidh after the Scottish Games. She is at peace now but will always remain in our thoughts and in our heart. Corrine Morrison Jarvis
