Obituary For Daniel J. Kelly III

If you are thinking about going the extra mile to help someone out, go ahead, because that's where you'll find the legacy of Daniel "Danny" J. Kelly III, who entered eternal life on Tuesday, May 3rd surrounded by love, in the arms of his wife of 31 years, Kelley Grealish Kelly and holding on to his daughter Lauren, his sons Danny and Jack and his dog, Maisie. His spirit now lives on in the hearts of his beloved mother, Jeanne A. Kelly of Arlington, his sisters, Erin Cave of Arlington, Shelagh Walker of Brookline and Karen Kiefer of Wayland, many in-laws, as well as in his cherished nieces and nephews, extended family, friends and the brotherhood of the Arlington Police Department. Danny was a man of great wit, wisdom and heart, and his lessons defined the way he lived. Among them: Family first. Work hard, really hard, but don't forget to dance a little, especially if you own a pair of white bucks. Get a dog. Take out the trash. Learn to skate. Give someone a second chance. Fairness matters. There's always time for a friend and a Guinness. Shop local and love your neighbors. Always have a sense of humor and if you don't have one, find one. If you are sick, keep fighting like HELL. Danny served on the Arlington Police for 32 years and coached and volunteered in the community for decades. He is now reunited in heaven with his father, Daniel J. Kelly, Jr., and his oldest sister, Maureen Kelly, as well as lots of other family members.

I would not have met Dan if he had not gotten sick. We walked our dogs together for these past 5 years and shared our ideas and thoughts and fears and joys. I am better for it as I know all who knew him are. He was proud of his Irish heritage AND he was a mensch.

Condolences to the entire Kelly Family. I have some awesome memories of playing hockey with Danny in the Sunday no check league. We also saw each other frequently at our kids Eastern Hockey Federation games. It was always great to catch up with him. My dad coached the Squirt AA Team and always had high praise for Danny's hockey ability.

To Danny and Kelly I am heartbroken beyond words. Some of the most memorable moments in my life included my friendship and fun times working for Danny and being around his friends and family. I will never forget that Danny was the first person to show up at my Mom's house when my brother passed away unexpectedly. Danny last spoke to me and said "Just be the greatest Dad and person that you can be and everything else will be just fine". May Love connect us and Faith direct us and God protect us. Godspeed Danny Kelly Tommy Lynch , Marisa and the entire Lynch Family

One day, I was driving down Mass Ave with my dogs, Magic sitting on my lap looking out the window, and Cooper, another dog, sitting in the passenger seat also looking out my window. We came to a construction site, I forget exactly where. Dan was doing a detail. I drove by him slowing and said hi. He looked at the dogs, didn't say a word, and just did one of those famous Dan head shakes! As he turned his head, I saw the grin (this was pre-Maisey)! Will never forget him. All my love, Jean

Words cannot begin to express the sorrow we all feel through the loss of a dear friend. Danny was one of a kind. His humor & wit was always refreshing. As hard as he worked, Dan always had time for his family & friends. Danny fought this disease harder than anyone I know...a true hero. Godspeed. Jim Palmer & family

With deepest sympathy to Kelley and family. Dan was a wonderful man and his passing is a tragic loss to everyone who knew him.

Dan is the life of any party, even this one. We are so lucky to have gotten to know Dan and Kelley over the last couple of years and to laugh with them so many times. Dan told our kids that when he was young, at Menotomy when you walk through the path that goes into the woods there is a really wet muddy pond and that when he was a kid, his friends dared him to walk across the log that sits across the muddy pond. Of course, he said, a dare is a dare and he did it, and ended up completely covered in mud. He also helped us figure out how to build a hockey rink in our yard (thank you to the Cave family for providing the materials) , where our kids learned to ice skate. Even when he felt sick he would come by with Maisie to check out the rink and watch the kids shoot pucks. He talked a lot about his kids all playing hockey, and practicing late at night shooting their pucks making all sorts of racket. He talked about the lights he had installed and the foam so they could put their skates on inside and walk with their skates to the rink.We miss him.
