Obituary for Ann Smith (Valkenburgh)

Ann D. Valkenburgh Smith, known to her friends as Andie, died May 26, 2018. She was 76 years old.

Born in Boston, she was the daughter of Alice Schultz Valkenburgh and Roger Ransom Valkenburgh.

After graduating from Phillips Academy Andover (1960) and Vassar College (1964), she became an editorial assistant at the New Yorker for staff writer Ved Mehta. She later moved to Darien, CT and subsequently Greenwich, CT where she worked in various positions at The Wilton Bulletin, The Redding Pilot, and Community Answers, the Greenwich, CT referral service where she served as the Director of Information. She was most recently a resident at Brookhaven at Lexington, a retirement community in Lexington, MA.

She is survived by her brother, Roger R. Valkenburgh Jr. of Wilton, CT, two daughters from her first marriage to John M. Kindred: Victoria Keziah of Boulder, CO, and Dr. Amy Anastasi of Belmont, MA; three stepsons from her second marriage to Philo Smith: Gregory Smith of Norwalk, CT, Jonathan Smith of Ridgefield, CT, and Adam Smith of San Francisco, CA; four grandchildren, and six step-grandchildren.

A celebration of her life will be held at Christ Church of Greenwich, CT on Friday, June 15th at 11am. Andie was a polio sufferer since early childhood, a lover of literary and fine arts, and a lifelong advocate of freedom of choice. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Planned Parenthood, Compassion and Choices, or Post Polio Health International.
