Joseph Arnold Murray, age 92, passed away at home in Watertown on May 9, 2018. Born January 2, 1926, Joe spent much of his life at sea.
Joe served as a deck officer in the Merchant Marines during World War II and also helped organize the first shipment of Jew to Palestine. On both occasions, he was too young to be frightened when the bombs fell and too foolhardy to be nervous when sent up the iciest of riggings.
Joe hiked and camped all over the west with his first wife Evelyn and his boys, Dennis and Bruce. Later, when his children were grown up, Joe went back to sea, first on “Blue Jenny” and later on the historic wooden ketch “Boss Lady”. He tried to cross the Atlantic twice in “Boss Lady”, each time springing a leak about a month out.
About 15 years ago, Joe had to give up his boat and move ashore because of health issues. The gardens that he created in his Watertown home were his pride and joy. Every year, friends, family, and even passersby would stop to visit and enjoy the marvelous creations of Joe’s labors.
Joe leaves behind his two sons, Dennis Murray, Bruce Murray, and their families, adopted nephews, and scores of friends who were enriched by knowing Joe. He is survived by his loving wife Kathleen.
