Shirley C. Rich
On January 19, 2018, Shirley C. Rich, formerly of Wellesley, MA, died at 103 years of age of complications of late-onset vascular dementia. Born on April 14, 1914, she was the 7th of 8 children of Katherine and Phillip Cohen. Graduating from Walton High School in the Bronx at 16, Shirley went to Hunter College, where she concentrated on mathematics and German language and literature. Subsequently, she was one of the first women admitted to City College’s School of Engineering in New York. She also danced in a Martha Graham troupe and maintained a lifelong interest in dance. She was married for 54 years to Stanley Robert Rich, who predeceased her. Together they enjoyed a rich and active life that included many friends, ballroom dancing, musical pursuits and downhill skiing (Shirley skied until she was 90 years old). In midlife Shirley became a sculptural potter and created many intricate and whimsical pieces. She was a devoted mother to her three daughters, Dr. Julie Rich Ingelfinger, Eugenia Zukerman and Laurie Rich and their spouses and families. She leaves 7 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Her siblings all predeceased her. There will be a memorial remembrance at a later date. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in her name to the American Cancer Society (as her late husband died of cancer) or to the charity of your choice.
